Can this be used as a serving dish for cold meats?

Yes it can. However, the reason I purchased them is for hot food. I heat the dinner plates to 400 degrees and then serve steak, lasagna or just about anything I want to stay warm on them. I even made special placemats that retain the heat and don't damage the table. I absolutely love these plates.
